Ardnamurchan Point - the most westerly point of the British Mainland - Visit the Kingdom of Light Visitors Centre
The unspoilt Ardnamurchan Peninsula lies due west of Fort William. Its southern coast runs alongside Loch Sunart and the Sound of Mull. The northern coast looks towards the nearby islands of Muck, Eigg and Rhum. Both coastlines meet at Ardnamurchan Point, home to Ardnamurchan Lighthouse. This lighthouse was one of many built by the Stevenson family. The only one in the world designed in an Egyptian style. This lighthouse stands in one of Scotland's most romantic settings embracing world class views of the Hebrides and the Small Isles.
The light tower soars to 36 metres above the rocks, and was built in 1849 using granite from the Island of Mull. Although now completely automated, the tower remains fully operational and still plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of all ships that navigate through the Minch. As Ardnamurchan Point's landmark icon, it now sends a welcoming beacon to all visitors. Visit the exhibition Centre, which is based in the Principal Keeper's House. you can also visit the Engine Room, the Fog Horn, the Keepers Cottages and relax at the Stables Cafe. The Centre now opens a door into the unique world that is Ardnamurchan Point, and is open daily from April to October.
